A New Chapter, Built the Right Way
Mitchell Family | Renton
A home designed to mark a new chapter, and reflect exactly who she is stepping into it.
The Challenge She Faced
Navigating a major life transition after losing her husband, Terry was ready to plant new roots, closer to family and on her own terms. When her son offered a portion of an inherited parcel to subdivide and build on, the vision was clear: a home next door to the people who mattered most. But the path there proved harder than expected. The builder she’d started with left her unsatisfied through preconstruction, and the relationship wasn’t working. A JayMarc webinar changed everything. She connected with the team, made the switch, and never looked back, finishing the planning and bringing her home to life with a partner she could trust.
Why She Chose JayMarc
Coming in later in the process than most, Terry noticed the difference in approach right away. “I noticed a better attitude from the JayMarc team than the previous builder. They made me feel like a part of the team.” As they worked through her plans, the status of the subdivision and the path toward permitting remained consistent and clear. “JayMarc kept me updated on problems that arose and answered my questions and gave me options, or sometimes there was only one option, but in the end, they always explained why, how, and let me make the final decision.”
The Journey
From the start, there was ground to make up. Dividing the lot, refining plans from their original design, and layering in expanded outdoor spaces and landscaping meant the team had meaningful catching up and finalizing to do before construction could begin. But as the process unfolded, so did Terry’s vision. “My basic vision of the interior design stayed the same; however, I made a big change in the layout of the bonus room upstairs with the help of JayMarc’s team and added many outdoor features because I had an oversized lot.”
Leaning into the experience of her Field and Project Managers gave Terry the space to relax, feel confident, and genuinely enjoy the journey. The weekly on-site meetings kept her informed, and the conversations were fluid. “They allowed me to go in a different direction than what was originally planned from time to time, like capping the soffits under the eaves or extending the width of my patio.” Morgan, Project Manager, was a steady presence throughout. “Great communication, and Morgan was very patient with all my phone calls and answered all my questions. I’m sure I took up a lot of his time.”
The expertise ran deep across the whole team. “Svein (Field Manager) was great at explaining all the little details,” from the thinking behind the baseboard design and how it helps prevent drywall cracks, to the broader techniques that set JayMarc’s builds apart. And when building code questions arose with the city, Gary (Permit Coordinator) stepped in seamlessly. “I appreciated Gary, who helped work with the city on building code issues. He was amazing. I didn’t have that with the other builder.”
What Surprised Her Most
Working with JayMarc’s interior design team to refine a home already in motion, Terry found the experience refreshingly collaborative. “They allowed me to use my ideas and make a few minor changes to the original design,” personal touches that made a lasting impression. The paneling in the stairway she described as “stunning,” and the wall mural at the top of the stairs has since drawn no shortage of compliments from guests.

Life in Her Home
Months later, Terry is still discovering the home. “I’m still finding things about the house I didn’t know, and haven’t quite moved everything into it. Right now, my furniture placement and wall decor are still a work in progress, but it’s a beautiful home, and it needs beautiful things in it.” In the meantime, she’s settling into the rhythms that make it hers: baking on her new stove, taking in the sunset views from the master suite, and unwinding in the upstairs outdoor space.
For anyone considering a custom build, her advice is grounded and hard-won: start with a vision, but hold it loosely. “Be prepared to change it a little as you move through the process. Don’t expect things to happen overnight. Building a custom home was one of the most memorable experiences, and actually taught me a great deal.”
